Abstract

Self-medication according to the World Health Organization (WHO) is self-medication
that is carried out by oneself to protect and treat all complaints of disease, both using modern
medicine and traditional medicine (Halim et al, 2018). Modern drugs that are safe for selfmedication, namely over-the-counter drugs, limited over-the-counter drugs and mandatory
pharmacy drugs (OWA). Based on the initial survey that the author conducted on 10 housewives
in the Pulau Laying village, it is known that those who have rational self-medication behavior
are 44% and those who are irrational are 66%. The purpose of this study was to determine the
description of the characteristics of housewives regarding self-medication in Pulau Layang
Village, Batang Masumai District, the Working Area of the Kederasan Panjang Health Center in
2021 

This type of research uses a quantitative descriptive method. The population and sample
were 71 respondents. This research was conducted on September 12 – September 17, 2021. The
data was collected through a questionnaire. The data was analyzed univariately using the ChiSquare test. It was found that there were more respondents who had less knowledge of selfmedication, namely 56 (79%), with a positive attitude as many as 38 (54%), and with a positive
perception as many as 53 (75%). Not all variables have a relationship with irrational selfmedication behavior, from the results of the study only a description of knowledge related to
irrational self-medication behavior. It is recommended to increase knowledge for housewives in
self-medication
